Meet William Tongi, the 18-year-old contestant of American Idol 2023.
William “Guy” Tongi is a fascinating 18-year-old with a rich cultural heritage hailing from the beautiful state of Hawaii. His Tonga/Samoa/Irish roots make him stand out, and his unique blend of musical talent is quite rare. Born on September 1st, 2004 in Kahuku, Hawaii to parents Rodney Guy and Lillie N Rodney Tongi, William started exploring his love for music at an early age. As a high school senior at Decatur High School in Washington state, he has come quite far in his musical journey. It all started in fifth grade when he learned to play the ukulele from a teacher. Since then, he has expanded his skills by picking up the guitar and developing himself as singer/songwriter.

In 2020, he released his debut song called “Dreams,” which was inspired by his sister’s wedding. The meaningful lyrics were written after many conversations with her about her love story with her fiancé turned husband. The final product was nothing short of beautiful; it was a heartfelt love song that resonated deeply with listeners.
When it comes to describing William’s music style, Singer/songwriter Lauren Gruwell says that it’s a mix of country and alternative genres but fans often associate it with Island vibes – perhaps due to William’s Hawaiian roots and affinity for playing both the guitar and ukulele. Regardless of how one describes the style, it’s clear that William has found something special within himself that brings joy not only to himself but also to those who listen to his music.
On TikTok and Instagram, Tongi regularly posts covers of songs. His profile has received over 500,000 likes, and he has over 77,000 followers on TikTok. Among the tunes he’s covered are Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and Vince Gill’s “Look at Us.” According to the preface to his appearance on the Rikishi Driver Talk Show in 2020, William believes that music helps him focus, and being diagnosed with ADHD makes it all the more important for him.
According to William’s social media profiles, his father Rodney was a huge influence on his musical interests. Sadly, Rodney passed away at the end of 2021 at the age of 50.
