While the Yellowstone universe continues to expand with a raft of spin-off shows, the main series is back on our screens for its long-awaited fifth season.
The new installment opens with John Dutton being sworn in as the new governor of Montana and sees him take office in an effort to prevent Market Equities from building an airport on Yellowstone Ranch.
With John Dutton’s new role comes a raft of fresh faces he has to meet and one of the key new arrivals in season 5 is Clara Brewer – but what do we know about this new Yellowstone character and the actress who plays her, Lilli Kay?
Yellowstone season 5 release date and plot preview
Season 5 of Yellowstone premiered on Paramount Network in the US on Sunday, November 13, 2022 and followed a day later on Paramount+ internationally.
The new chapter begins with John Dutton being sworn in as the governor of Montana and while his new role safeguards Yellowstone Ranch against Market Equities’ plan to build an airport on the land, it has well and truly riled up their CEO, Caroline Warner.
Warner vows to bring down the Duttons and their ranch and is preparing to bring in the big guns to do so.
While John’s new role as governor has given him more power, it has also put a bigger target on his back than ever before.
Who is Clara Brewer in Yellowstone?
Clara Brewer is introduced in episode 2 of Yellowstone season 5.
She works at the office of Montana’s governor and as a result, is John Dutton’s new assistant.
She first appears early on in the second episode as John looks to make some changes by hiring Beth as his new chief of staff.
Brewer only has a minor role in the opening episodes but she is likely to be a key player as she works alongside John and the Duttons as Market Equities step up their efforts to tear down Yellowstone Ranch.
Speaking to Hello, actress Lilli Kay delved into her new character, saying: “I think it’s kind of hilarious. This is a character who is entering this world that she’s very not accustomed to. She is a political [woman]. She’s used to sort of dealing with politicians, she’s not used to this and I think she, in a weird way, is like us.
“If any of us were to walk into this family and this world, you’d go ‘I got to get it together.’ But I think she does have her feet on the ground when it comes to politics in a very sort of morally straightforward way, which is new.”
On Clara’s relationship with John, Lilli added: “Initially, he’s a big challenge. He’s difficult to wrangle but I think she just gains so much respect for him and for the way that he operates and I think they kind of have a little bit of camaraderie as it goes along. They sort of start to get used to each other.”

Taking on the role of Clara Brewer in Yellowstone is Lilli Kay
Reportedly born in Brooklyn, Lilli has only recently broken into the acting industry with her first role coming in the 2018 TV movie, Paterno.
Since then, the rising star has appeared in some increasingly big-name productions including Madam Secretary, Netflix’s Chambers and Showtime’s Your Honor where she appeared alongside Bryan Cranston as the character Fia Baxter.
Like most actors in the modern industry, Lilli is highly active on social media, most notably Instagram, where she currently has a following of just over 14,000, a number that is likely to increase given her prominent role in Yellowstone.
Back in August, Lilli posted a behind-the-scenes image from the set of Yellowstone which she captioned “simply the best.”
Yellowstone season 5 is airing weekly on Paramount Network in the US and Paramount+ internationally.
