Courtney Dauwalter’s husband, Kevin Schmidt, competed in Utah’s 21st Annual Bear 100, which Dauwalter crewed for.

The Bear 100 Endurance Run runs from Logan, Utah, to Fish Haven. It must be completed within 36 hours. It has a total elevation gain of 6701 metres and an average elevation of 2300 metres. According to organisers, approximately one-third of the participants dropped out due to injury or ongoing difficulty.

Bear 100 is classified as an ultramarathon because it is longer than a traditional marathon of 26.2 miles. It is four times the length of a standard marathon.

Courtney learned what it’s like to be behind the scenes of such marathons as she crewed Kevin with his friends in his ultramarathon in 2019’s Bear 100. Crewing entails providing sustenance and care to runners on the course at aid stations.

Kevin finished in 27 hours and 53 minutes, placing him 62nd out of 334 participants. Kevin completed the Bear 100 by following a friend’s advice to start slowly and fade out.

Kevin’s four-point rule, which he used to complete Bear 100, was to look, feel good, and at last, safe. The start went pretty smoothly for Kevin, but around 3 am at night, it started downpouring while he was still out on the trail. The rain turned the difficult trail into a mud bath, making it difficult to continue.

There is no such thing as being overprepared; Kevin had started packing two weeks before his Ultramarathon, obsessing over his gear to improve his chances.

He joked as the trail became difficult to continue in Salmon TV’s short film, which documented his and Courtney’s experience; the look on his face must have been nothing out of the ordinary. He went on to say that it felt like he was fighting with everything he had left.

Although, according to Courtney, Kevin decided that running was not his thing, he fell in love with the Ultrarunning community and decided to start with a 50K. Courtney joked that it might have something to do with tater tots and bacon at the aid stations.

Kevin finished the Bear 100 by pushing through the last few miles. Kevin exclaimed with a big grin, “I ran 100 miles!” after talking about his experience and why he did it.

He also mentioned how easy it was to fall in love with and cool the ultramarathon communities were. Finally, he stated that it was a fun adventure and that why not try it?

Early Life

Dauwalter grew up in Hopkins, Minnesota, and participated in high school track, cross-country, and nordic skiing. During her high school career, she was a four-time Minnesota state champion in nordic skiing.

She attended the University of Denver on a cross-country skiing scholarship, and then earned a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Mississippi in 2010 while participating in the Mississippi Teacher Corps.

Dauwalter worked as a middle and high-school teacher in the Denver area before becoming a full-time professional runner in 2017.

In 2016, Dauwalter set a course record at the Javelina Jundred 100K and won the Run Rabbit Run 100-mile race by 75 minutes. She also won the 2017 Run Rabbit Run despite experiencing temporary blindness during the final 12 miles.

Dauwalter won the 2017 edition of the Moab 240 race in 2 days, 9 hours, and 59 minutes, finishing first overall and beating the second-place finisher by more than 10 hours.

Dauwalter won the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile race, in 2018 with a time of 17h27m. This was the race’s second-fastest female time. Dauwalter finished second overall and completed 67 laps in the Big’s Backyard Ultra in 2018, setting the women’s course record of 279.268 miles.

In addition, she finished second in the Tahoe 200, breaking the previous women’s course record by more than 18 hours.

Dauwalter won the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in 2019 with a time of 24 hours, 34 minutes, and 26 seconds, finishing 21st overall. She also competed in the 2019 Western States, but dropped out after 77 miles. In October 2019, Dauwalter competed for the United States at the IAU 24 Hour World Championship in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France, finishing 12th.

Dauwalter won the American section of Big Dog’s Ultra in 2020. She completed the race in 56 hours, 52 minutes, and 29 seconds after running 68 laps for 283.3 miles. She broke the race record for the longest distance run by a female runner.
