Titanic: The Musical in theaters for limited time

Written by Marcus Reynolds — 0 Views

The maiden voyage of the ship Titanic is widely regarded as one of the most heartbreaking tragedies outside of wartime. It sank into the ocean in the early hours of April 15th 1912, resulting in the deaths of over 1,500 of an estimated 2,224 people onboard the vessel. James Cameron’s romantic disaster epic in 1997 revived mainstream interest in the tragedy, but there was a musical that debuted the same year exploring the sinking too.

Titanic: The Musical sails into theaters

Titanic: The Musical is a production that first opened on Broadway in 1997 and was directed by Richard Jones. It earned five Tony Awards and ran for over 800 performances.

With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, the musical shares no connection to the James Cameron movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but similarly, it proved a hit with fans. Audiences in the nineties may have been very surprised to see the disaster transformed into a Hollywood love story, but turning it into a musical would have appeared even more ridiculous for many viewers.

This year, a recording of the performance which took place in 2013 at Southwark Playhouse is being screened exclusively in theaters, brought to you by Fathom Events.

It’s being released on the big screen in celebration of the performances’ 10th anniversary, as well as the original production’s 26th.

As it’s not associated with the blockbuster movie, the musical doesn’t center on the heartbreaking romance between Jack and Rose (Kate Winslet). Instead, the characters are based on real people who were aboard, their hopes and aspirations coming to light.
