The Peripheral Season 2 Gets A Positive Update From Amazon Studios Head
The Peripheral season 2 gets a reassuring update from Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ Head of Television. The Peripheral adapts William Gibson’s 2014 homonymous novel. The sci-fi series hails from creator/showrunner Scott B. Smith and is executive produced by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher and Jack Reynor as Burton Fisher. The lives of the brother and sister duo get turned upside down when they become entangled in a conspiracy taking place in the future.
In an interview with Collider, Amazon Studios’ Head of Television, Vernon Sanders, gave a positive update on The Peripheral season 2. According to Sanders, things are looking good for the show’s renewal, with the Amazon team currently “hard at work on scripts for Season 2 and a plan for Season 2“. Sanders also made an interesting connection between The Peripheral’s success to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power fans. The executive claims The Rings of Power’s season 1 brought in new subscribers to Prime Video, and there was a major crossover in viewership between The Rings of Power and The Peripheral. Check out Sanders’ full quote below:
We are in talks about Season 2 as we speak. We were thrilled to see real engagement and a lot of crossover from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ fans. So, it’s kind of what we were hoping, that we were getting a bunch of people into the service for that show, and that they would go on to watch our next show. They’re so different in tone, and obviously one’s fantasy and one’s sci-fi. We’re incredibly proud of the producers of ‘The Peripheral.’ So I think there’ll be news on that in the not-too-distant future. We’re already hard at work on scripts for Season 2 and a plan for Season 2, so nothing to say officially right now, but we’re deep into it.

The Peripheral’s season 1 ending surprised audiences with Flynne’s dramatic choice in the finale. The show keeps in line with executive producers Joy and Nolan’s previous venture Westworld, with numerous conflicting timelines informing the main plot of the series. In the finale, those timelines come to a head as Flynne decides to finally take control of her situation by way of allying with the Met’s Inspector Ainsley Lowbeer. Through this alliance, Flynne manages to protect her family and timeline, or “Stub,” as the show refers and throws villain Dr. Cherise Nuland, Head of the Research Institute, off her scent.
The main problem of this course of action, and what confused viewers, is how Flynne accomplishes such a feat. Flynne seemingly dies in the finale. In The Peripheral season 1 finale, Flynne infiltrates the secret Research Institute facility stubs are controlled from. She then creates a new stub that diverges from her timeline and destroys the Research Institute’s pocket watch she used to make it, making sure Cherise can’t access it. Finally, to stop the apocalyptic Jackpot event Cherise has put in motion against Flynne’s stub, Moretz’s character decides to sacrifice herself by having her friend Conner kill her with a sniper rifle.
What Could Happen In The Peripheral Season 2
After Flynne’s death in The Peripheral season 1 finale, Cherise is left with no reason to destroy the stub and stops her plan of putting the Jackpot in motion early. Cherise intended to use such a drastic measure because she discovered that the data Aelita stole from the Research Institute was stored within Flynne’s DNA. The Peripheral season 2 will likely touch upon that point, as Cherise won’t be happy to find out she was tricked and that Flynne’s still out there. The Flynne audiences followed on season 1’s dead, but a parallel version of her was created, along with a whole new stub, and that’s the version that will continue in season 2. The season ends with Flynne awakening in future London and meeting Inspector Lowbeer. A post-credits scene also teased an impending Klept threat when The Peripheral returns.
