Sandy Cortez is an American politician and activist who is best known as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, sometimes known by her initials AOC. Sandy Cortez was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx. As a member of the Democratic Party’s congressional delegation, she has been serving the 14th congressional district of New York since 2019.

Following her victory in the Democratic Party’s primary election for New York’s 14th congressional district on June 26, 2018, she received widespread attention across the world. As a result of her stunning victory, Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, was largely considered to have suffered the election’s biggest upset.

Sandy Cortez was born on October 13, 1989, in the Bronx, New York City, to a Catholic family. She grew up in the Bronx. The young girl grew up with her family in a Parkchester apartment in the Bronx until she was five years old, when her family moved to the suburb of Yorktown Heights.

Early on, the discrepancy in educational opportunities available to her and her siblings based on their separate zip codes left an impression on her, and she carried that image into adulthood.

Later, in 2007, she received her diploma from Yorktown High School. When Sandy Ocasio-Cortez was in high school and college, she was referred to as “Sandy Ocasio.” After graduating from high school, she went on to study at Boston University.

Unfortunately, her father passed away from lung cancer during her second year in college, and Ocasio-Cortez became embroiled in a protracted legal battle to settle the estate of her father.

“I learned directly how attorneys appointed by the court to administer an estate can enrich themselves at the expense of families attempting to make sense of the bureaucracy,” she believes the encounter taught her.
