The beginnings

Teenage years

Barkley went to Whitehall High School in Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania. This school is in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, which is the best division for big high schools in the Lehigh Valley and Poconos. This division has produced a lot of NFL players and other professional athletes, which is known all over the country.

From his sophomore to senior year at Whitehall High School, Barkley ran for 3,646 yards and 63 touchdowns, including 1,856 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior. Barkley was a four-star recruit and signed to play college football at Penn State. He first chose Rutgers, but then switched to Penn State.

Barkley also got a letter in basketball and track and field while he was at Whitehall. As a senior in 2015, he won gold medals in the 100-meter dash (11.15 seconds) and the long jump (22’2.5″ or 6.77m) at the PIAA District 11 meet. He also placed second in the 100-meter dash (10.90 seconds), which set a Whitehall High School record. Later in the track and field season, Barkley set personal bests of 46’2.5″ (14.08m) in the shot put and 6’0″ (1.83m)

Barkley was thought to be one of the best prospects for NCAA Division I football. Missouri, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Temple all offered him football scholarships. He chose to take Penn State’s offer.

Going to college

Barkley got to play right away at Penn State as a true freshman in 2015. In his first game, he ran for one yard on one carry. In his second game, against Buffalo, he ran for 115 yards and a touchdown. In his third game, against Rutgers, he ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. This was his second good game. In October, he was hurt and had to miss two games.

On October 17, 2015, in his first game back against top-ranked Ohio State, he ran for 194 yards on 26 carries. In 2015, Barkley’s first year at Penn State, he ran for 182 times for 1,076 yards.

During the offseason, Barkley’s performance as a freshman was praised. He was named to the second team of All-Big Ten, and some people voted for him to be on the first team. He was also named the BTN.com Freshman of the Year.

The second year

The Nittany Lions had a chance to win, but quarterback Trace McSorley threw an interception in the Pitt end zone with 1:41 left. This ended those hopes. In week five, against Minnesota, Penn State again had to come back from being down at halftime. This would be a common theme for the 2016 Penn State football team. After only getting 38 yards on 19 carries during regular time, Barkley scored on his first play of overtime, a 25-yard run, to give Penn State the win.

Barkley ran for 202 yards and one touchdown on 31 carries in Penn State’s game against Maryland in week six. This was the first time he had ever run for 200 yards in a game. In week seven, Barkley ran for 99 yards on 12 carries and had a 37-yard run in a 24–21 win over the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. In week eight, Barkley and no. 24 Penn State scored a season-high 62 points against Purdue. Barkley rushed for a career-high 207 yards and had a career-long 81-yard run. He also caught passes for 70 yards and scored two touchdowns, giving him a total of 277 Penn State beat Purdue 62–24 and now has a record of 6–2 and a Big Ten record of 4–1.

On November 1, 2016, Barkley was named a semi-finalist for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the best all-around college football player of the year. On November 5, Barkley ran for 167 yards and a touchdown against Iowa. He also caught a pass for 44 yards and another touchdown, giving him a total of 211 yards in Penn State’s 41–14 win.

Barkley was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Ameche–Dayne Running Back of the Year, and First Team All-Big Ten after the regular season was over.

On December 3, 2016, Barkley ran 19 times for 83 yards, scored a touchdown while running, and then caught a touchdown pass on a wheel route. In the 2016 Big Ten Championship Game, Penn State beat Wisconsin 38–31, even though they were down 28–7. This was thanks to his work.

On January 2, 2017, in the 2017 Rose Bowl, Barkley ran 25 times for a total of 194 yards, which is 7.8 yards per carry. He also scored a 79-yard touchdown run that gave Penn State a 28–27 lead. After falling behind 13–0, Penn State scored seven touchdowns in a row, including four touchdowns in a row on offense, including Barkley’s 79-yard score. Barkley scored the first, fourth, and seventh touchdowns for Penn State. This gave the Nittany Lions a 49–35 lead in the fourth quarter, but USC went on to win the game 52–49.
