Push for legislation to better protect bicyclists in Iowa

In Iowa, there’s talk of pushing new bike legislation this upcoming session. This year was one of the deadliest years for cyclists in the Hawkeye State. The Iowa Bicycle Coalition says 11 people died while riding on the roads. That’s the highest number in more than a decade. That’s why the Bicycle Coalition is joining others to push for laws to make cycling safer. One law would require cars passing cyclists to change lanes. Opponents question the safety of cars lining up behind a biker until it’s clear to pass. Supporters say it will ensure enough room on the roads for both drivers and bikers. The bill passed the Iowa Senate last year but didn’t make it to the House. The coalition plans to try again in 2017; this time, pushing for harsher penalties for distracted drivers.
