Punxsutawney Phil predicts long winter!

Written by Andrew Mccoy — 0 Views

Every day feels like Groundhog Day now, but today really is Groundhog Day 2021, and we’ve got the memes to make it worthwhile.

February 2nd marks Groundhog Day every year for the US and Canada. The day when a literally Groundhog predicts the weather.

The tradition derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, due to the clear weather, it will retreat back and winter will persist for six more weeks.

Did you know: The tradition actually began in Germany, where they believed badgers could predict the spring with the same superstition. When they came to America, they had to substitute badgers with groundhogs.

As the custom goes, if Punxsutawney Phil (a large burrowing rodent) emerges from hibernation to see his own shadow, he will take this as a sign of six more weeks of winter, and return to his burrow. What’s been predicted so far?

Punxsutawney Phil is by far the most recognised groundhog of Groundhog Day, thanks to the 1993 film with the same name. The annual ceremony occurs in Pennsylvania, and this year was bad news.

A long winter was predicted by Punxsutawney Phil. However, Staten Island Chuck and Buckeye Chuck, two less famous groundhogs, have predicted early springs instead.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA - FEBRUARY 2: Groundhog handler John Griffiths (2nd-R) holds Punxsutawney Phil while members of the Inner Circle read the proclamation after Phil did not see his shadow predicting an early spring during the 125th annual Groundhog Day festivities on February 2, 2011 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States and Canada. A smaller than usual crowd this year of less than 15,000 people spent a night of revelry awaiting the sunrise and the groundhog's exit from his winter den. If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his den. Early spring arrives if he does not see his shadow causing Phil to remain above ground. (Photo by Jeff Swensen/Getty Images)
