Mothers mourn loss of Bettendorf doctor

Mothers around the Quad Cities are mourning the loss of Dianne Giammetta, a doctor and a friend.

Doctor Dianne Giammetta and Dominic (Don) Giammetta died in a plane crash in Kentucky May 12. Dianne worked as a gynecologist at Unity Point Health Trinity in Moline.

“I got married and came from India in 2001, and the very next year we were planning to have a family and that’s when we decided to find a doctor,” said Archana Mohan, one of Giammetta’s patients. “And it was one of my family friends who suggested Giammetta. I was lucky to have her as my doctor.”

Mohan went to Giammetta for the birth of her two daughters, and she said she made her feel safe and secure during the entire process.

“Initially it was very scary being a first time mom, you have so many questions and she was the kind of person you could ask anything under the son and she would be there for you,” said Mohan. “She was more than a doctor, she was a friend, a soul sister.”

Her patients said she made them feel like they had a friend at their side.

“Extremely kind, extremely nice, she makes you so comfortable,” said Mohan. “Always ready to listen, heart of gold.”

“She made you feel like she was treating you special you know,” said Daina Lewis, another patient. “But she treated everybody that way and that’s what’s so spectacular and amazing about her.”

Lewis used Giammetta for the birth of her children as well. Giammetta was there for the first two. During the third, Lewis had to be induced for health reasons. She said she was nervous about the entire process until Giammetta walked into the room.

“You never know, when you’re having a baby and your doctor or midwife is not there, who might walk in the room,” said Lewis. “I was really just hoping and praying that it would be her to walk in and help us decide what we were going to do and it was. As soon as she walked in I just starting sobbing.”

Lewis says she was a huge part of some of the biggest moments of her life, and she was shocked when she heard the news.

“The one person who really helped us become parents, and the day before Mother’s Day we lose her,” said Lewis.

Dr. Giammetta was known for her smile, her hugs, and for singing “Happy Birthday” as each new life came into the world.

Although she died unexpectedly, mothers in the QCA felt her impact and are grateful she was a part of their families’ lives.

“I would definitely tell her parents a big thank you for having brought us such a wonderful soul into this world that they should be really proud that they got to be the parent of Dr. Giammetta.”
