Miss France's iconic 'scream' joins SNL universe in Aubrey Plaza skit
An iconic Miss Universe moment from 2018, when the former Miss France belted her title with an unusual scream, has been reimagined by the Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast.
Saturday Night Live returned on January 21, 2023 after a brief hiatus.
The first SNL episode of the year saw American actress and comedian Aubrey Plaza as host. Plaza, who just made a dramatic turn in The White Lotus season 2, took to the stage in several hilarious skits.
One of the most memorable skits from the evening, which saw most of the SNL cast descend on the stage, centered on a Miss Universe moment from several years back.
Bizarre moment from 2018 Miss Universe pageant revisited
This January has seen a moment from a Miss Universe pageant almost five years ago unearthed. A clip of French beauty queen Eva Colas when she competed in the pageant has taken over TikTok. This is largely because of the unusual way Colas pronounced the name of her home country.

Aubrey Plaza takes on Miss France’s scream
In the Miss Universe skit, several SNL cast members pose as pageant competing pageant queens. Aubrey Plaza joins the stage with Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Chloe Fineman, Punkie Johnson, Sarah Sherman, and Molly Kearney as contestants from the likes of Albania, Barbados, and France.
Kenan Thompson stars as the Miss Universe host, asking the pageant queens a series of questions. He starts off with basic introductions, where the contestants state the country they are repping.
Taking inspiration from Eva Colas, all of the contestants scream out their country’s name. And, of course, Plaza stars as the leading lady in question, Miss France.
“Not sure that I made this clear, didn’t think that I would have to, but you don’t need to scream every answer. Also, Miss France, are you okay?” Thompson then asks the Miss Universe queens.
What did Miss France say about her viral ‘scream’?
Starting year going viral over an unearthed clip, former Miss France Eva Colas has not shied away from her bizarre on-stage ‘scream’. In fact, Colas has touched on it as a lesson to carry forward and share with others.
In an Instagram post, translated from French, Colas wrote: “In life, not everything always goes as you wish. This is a good illustration of it, but there is always something positive to be gained if you look carefully.”
“I hope my experience can inspire and give strength to some,” Colas added. She also joked that the “good news” is that she’s changing her name soon. The former Miss France is currently engaged and set to marry her partner soon. Eva Colas will be taking her fiancé’s, Matthieu Giraud, last name.
