Jolly Joseph aka Joliyamma, is an Indian woman who became a suspected criminal in a notorious murder case known as the Koodathayi murders.

She was born in 1972 in Vazhavara, Idukki, Kerala, she is alleged to be the main accused in the murder of six of her family members over around 14 years.

Her life took a dark turn, and the suspicious deaths in her family began in 2002 when her mother-in-law passed away due to health issues. 

Subsequently, her father-in-law died of a heart attack in 2008, followed by the death of her husband, Roy Thomas, within three years. Concerns arose when Roy’s maternal uncle insisted on a post-mortem, revealing that Roy had consumed cyanide.

Despite the findings, the local police ruled it as a suicide and did not investigate further.

The series of deaths continued, with several more family members and relatives passing away under mysterious circumstances.

Jolly married her second husband, Shaju Sakhariya, a cousin of her deceased husband Roy, further raising suspicions.

The case took a significant turn when Roy’s real brother, Rojo Thomas, began investigating Jolly’s past.

Discrepancies in her statements and post-mortem reports led to suspicions, and Rojo filed a complaint.

The Kozhikode police initiated an investigation, uncovering around 50 discrepancies and confirming that Jolly was not employed at NIT as she had claimed.

After around two months of investigation, Jolly Joseph was arrested, and she reportedly confessed to murdering all six family members with cyanide.

The police revealed that she had enlisted the help of individuals, including a jewelry shop employee named M. S. Mathew and a goldsmith named Praji Kumar, to obtain cyanide. Jolly allegedly poisoned her family members to gain control over their finances and property.

In 2023, Jolly’s advocate sought her discharge in the Kerala High Court, arguing a lack of solid evidence. However, the court rejected the plea, stating that there was sufficient material on record to suspect her involvement in the murders.

The infamous case gained widespread attention, with depictions in TV series, documentaries, and podcasts.
