November 30, 2023: Leo LaRocca, a former director of athletics, mentor, counselor, guardian, teacher, friend, and coach, passed away. The St. Ignatius College Prep community is saddened by his loss.
On Thursday, November 30, 2023, Leo LaRocca went away peacefully in the company of his cherished family.
In a statement, the community of St. Ignatius expressed its profound loss and sorrow, writing, “RIP my mentor, advisor, protector, teacher, friend, and coach.”
Director of Athletics at St. Ignatius College Prep was the devoted and hardworking Leo LaRocca. Athletes who understood the important role he played in their moments on the field, court, or diamond respected his enthusiasm and athletic expertise.
His organizational skills were valued by coaches, and athletes were motivated by his commitment and knowledge.
From June 22, 1949, to 1953, Leo LaRocca attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory, where his academic career got its start. After pursuing his education at the University of San Francisco, he earned his degree in 1957.
Because of his capacity to assist people in need, he was affectionately dubbed “The Godfather” while serving as Director of Athletics.
His influence went beyond athletics, establishing a long-lasting legacy of counseling and mentoring.
Four years after he retired, in 2004, SI presented Leo LaRocca with the renowned Christ the King Award, honoring his remarkable contributions and remarkable character.
This prize was a recognition of his assistance with SI’s move and made sure that when female students joined in 1989, they could play on competitive teams.
Leo LaRocca was dedicated to giving pupils an exciting and dynamic educational experience, which was shown in his devotion to self-improvement and keeping up with educational innovations.
He was a leader at heart, but he was also a lifelong learner because of his vast experience and knowledge.
Leo LaRocca’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the revolutionary influence he had on St. Ignatius College Prep, as the St. Ignatius community mourns his passing.
