Is the tree that grows eggs real? The truth behind 'vegan eggs'
Forget vegan meat, veggie lovers are seriously considering eating eggs that supposedly grow on trees! If you are mind-blown by the viral “eggplant tree” too, here’s what you need to know about it.
Recent years have definitely witnessed a boom in the vegan lifestyle, but who would’ve imagined a tree that could produce real chicken eggs?
A number of videos on YouTube and TikTok claim, chicken eggs can be harvested in a certain manner to reproduce more of them, like real fruits on a real tree.
But, don’t let the false claims fool you!
Is the tree that grows eggs real?
No, there exists no tree that can grow eggs, even though the false claim is all over social media.
However, eggplant trees are real and the produce from it are also edible. An ornamental eggplant is similar to an original eggplant, except for the color.
The ornamental eggplant, which is a real vegetable, looks eerily similar to real eggs with a white outer body.
They also come in the same size as hen eggs and turn creamish yellow on riping. Debunking the claims that real eggs can be grown on trees, SF Gate clarifies: “An egg tree plant is edible, though it may not taste very good. This assumes you are talking about ornamental eggplant and not just eggs on tree leaves.”
The ornamental eggplants are not the same as the purple ones you generally find in grocery stores. The produce from the 3-foot-tall trees is known as ‘White Beauty’ and ‘Albino’ fruits.
Don’t believe the baseless claims
The wild claims about real eggs growing on real trees stem from videos that are skillfully edited to fool the viewers.
These viral clips show the steps for “unbelievable grafting” to create “Egg Fruit”, which is labeled as “vegan’. However, none of the videos show the eggs in the growing stages and only feature the end result with a fully-grown egg.
Moreover, the eggs glued to real trees and plants consist of real yolks, which are still edible. However, these are naturally obtained by chickens as opposed to the science-defying claim that they were grafted like a plant.
Owing to the size and color of real eggplants, innocent social media users have come to believe that “vegan eggs” are real and grow on trees.
The videos and the methods showcased in the viral videos maybe be highly convincing, but many social media users were quick to call out the false claims about the made-up egg trees.
One user commented: “No way this is real. I challenge the creator to show the egg in its growing stages. But they can’t”
“This is impossible. If you thought eggplant could lay eggs… I am speechless,” added another.
Another comment read: “The eggs are glued to the tree! Am I the only one to see it?”
