Illinois bill could make migrant funding more transparent

Written by Olivia Shea — 0 Views

The State of Illinois is using taxpayer money to help Chicago deal with the influx of migrants, and Illinois Senate GOP members are proposing a bill demanding transparency in how that money is being spent.

One Senate Republican leader says the Governor JB Pritzker’s emergency disaster proclamation has made it impossible to know how much taxpayer money is being spent and feels the bill will clear things up. When asked about the proposed bill, Pritzker agreed that people deserve transparency.

Comptroller Suzanna Mendoza says she’s concerned about staying within the budget.
In November, Mendoza created an online portal tracking all spending on the migrant crisis. GOP Senate members haven’t met with her to talk about whether her portal could reach the goals of their bill.
