Nintendo just announced a brand new power-up that turns Mario into an elephant and memes are taking over Twitter.

The hilarious power-up will feature in Wonder, a brand new 2D Super Mario Bros game which is coming in October on Nintendo Switch.

It was announced on Wednesday (June 21) at the Nintendo Direct presentation and features loads of new items like the blue Wonder Flower.

However, the funniest addition is an unnamed elephant-like fruit which turns the red plumber into an enhanced Elephant Mario.

At the end of the trailer, Mario hits a yellow question mark block to reveal a floating circle with a red elephant apple on it.

He catches the item and powers up into a big grey elephant which can walk straight into enemies and kick them away.

The Mario game has excited Nintendo gamers across the world and sparked a flurry of Elephant Mario memes online.
