Erika Harold willing to stray from Republican Party line
Erika Harold is trying to make a big splash in the Illinois attorney general’s race.
She is finishing strong on the fundraising end of things and isn’t afraid to take positions that stray from the Republican party line. Here’s the second part of our conversation.
Some issues she’s campaigning on call for criminal justice reform like rehabilitation for non-violent offenders such as drug crimes, addressing harassment like bullying and sexual misconduct to protect victims and ideas to make a dent in the opioid epidemic that include treatment.
These have long been progressive ideas.
So I asked her, “Are you sure you’re a Republican?”
“The fact that people find it attractive regardless of the political spectrum tells me I’m identifying the issues that are most important to the people of this state,” Harold said after a laugh. “And I have a background that encompasses a lot of experience in those arenas. … That’s why I’ll be an effective attorney general for people regardless of political affiliation. My opponent has tried to make this race about partisan politics. I want to make this about the people’s interest and the things that can unite us.”
Harold went on to discuss her positions on criminal justice reform, recreational marijuana and sexual harassment protections in detail.
