The blaze is believed to have erupted at the abandoned Robertson's furniture building on Barrack Street in the city.

Fire crews were scrambled to the raging inferno - with nine fire engines and a specialist resource deployed.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported inside the burning building.

A witness told The Scottish Sun how quickly the flames spread, claiming: "Even with the best efforts of the fire service the building became an inferno within minutes."

The fire could be seen from all over the city as smoke billowed in the sky.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said that crews remained at the scene this morning.
