Sonos have just released a new update called S2, but many users are confused as to whether or not they should update their existing system.

Millions of people around the world use Sonos products to listen to music around the home.

Sonos have just released a brand-new app called the S2, which updates users’ system and ushers in a new chapter in the brand’s life.

“Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences.” – Sonos S2 Homepage.

However, the update has left some users utterly confused and frustrated.

Here is everything you need to know about compatibility, mixing new and old products and features between S1 and S2.

Sonos S1 vs S2: Compatibility

Unfortunately, the new update is not compatible with all Sonos products.

“Some of our oldest products (previously referred to as “legacy” products) will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. If you own any of these products, you can continue to use your system as you do today.” – Sonos S2.

At the time of writing, the current list for products that are classed as ‘legacy’ products and are therefore not compatible with S2 include ZonePlayer, CR200, Bridge, first-generation Connect, first-generation Connect: Amp and the first-generation Play:5.

Although these products will still get bug fixes and security updates (for the time being).

You should note that once you update to S2, there is no way to reverse this – so read the following section on what to do.

Sonos S1 vs S2: Mixing new and old product

If you do have some of the older ‘legacy’ products previously listed, there are three options available to you:

Keep the entire operating system as it is. If you have a set up in your household that you are happy with, then there is no point necessarily in worrying too much going forward. You can just use the old S1 system, don’t update to S2 and don’t purchase any new productions (as S2 is now built-in).

Split the system in two. This option is a little bit ‘messier’, but it can work for family’s that use speakers independently of each other. Keep the older ‘legacy’ products on the S1 system and update the newer products to the S2 system. You’ll need both of the apps in order to work each system but if you can get over the effort of switching between them, it could work nicely.

Trade-in the old S1 devices. Sonos is still offering a discount when older devices are traded in for newer products. So, find somewhere in your local area where you can trade the product in and get a whole new set of speakers for yourself.

Sonos S1 vs S2: New features

There are three main new features or quality-of-life updates that are brought in with S2 in comparison to S1.

The first is audio quality and audio bandwidth. According to the S2 homepage: “With upgraded audio processing, Sonos S2 supports higher resolution audio technologies for music and home cinema, including Dolby Atmos.”

Next is an update related to design – something users had been requesting for a while. The new app “makes it even simpler for you to search for content, control the sound, and personalise your listening experience.”

Finally, is increased security. According to the S2 homepage, this includes: “Enhanced protocols, including support for elliptic curve cipher suites in SSL/TLS, keep your system safer and your data more secure.”

If you are still undecided about the new update, check out the Sonos S2 homepage yourself and the community support pages they have set up here.
