A 35-year-old Colona man is in custody after police allege he tried to grab a pocket knife during a scuffle with police in Walmart, according to court records.

Donald Hintz III faces a felony charge of interference with official acts – dangerous weapon and a serious misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree theft, court records show.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, officers were notified about a theft in progress at Walmart, 3101 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport.

Loss-prevention employees were monitoring Hintz, who, police allege, placed a Cricut printer system into his cart and passed all points of sale and walked out of the store without paying. The total value of the printer was $379.

While speaking with an officer, Hintz “was advised that he was going to be patted down for weapons due to his behavior,” police say in affidavits. As officers tried to take Hintz into custody he ran off “while reaching toward his front pants area,” according to affidavits.

Police “were able to get the defendant to the ground and he continued to reach toward his pocket/waistband area,” affidavits show. Police allege Hintz, who had a pocket knife in his front pants pocket, was trying to retrieve it while fighting with officers.

Hintz’s actions “interfered with officers ability to conduct their investigation and placed them in fear of their safety,” affidavits show.

Hintz, who is being held on $5,000 bond in Scott County Jail, is set for a preliminary hearing Feb. 9 in Scott County Court.
