Breaking Bad: 8 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up Walter White

Written by Noah Mitchell — 0 Views

Now that Better Call Saul has concluded, the world of Breaking Bad is once again in the minds of television fans — though for many, it’s never left their minds. Vince Gilligan’s vision of the New Mexico crime world has created many unique and enjoyable characters, the most notable being “Heisenberg” himself, Walter White.

For all the grimness in Breaking Bad, there’s something about Walter’s sense of self-seriousness in his Heisenberg persona that makes him so meme-able. Fans have spent years creating the best content in images, videos and more, summarizing the character’s complex traits by poking fun at his seriousness.

Justification

One of Walter White’s most infuriating character arcs was his handling of his marriage. Him and Skyler were constantly at odds over his behavior and then later about his drug business, in which he continued to find ways to gaslight or threaten her in order to keep his business afloat.

Walt’s skills as a teacher couldn’t have saved him from trying to explain himself on this matter, however. The mental gymnastics he had to use to keep his marriage alive were excessive, and could’ve filled an entire university chalkboard. Not to mention, enlarging the head over the small scaled body hilariously depicts his arrogance.

Character Development

Part of what makes Breaking Bad so great and so rewatchable is seeing his development over time, knowing well where he’d be ending up in the final episode, “Felina.” The defense in his cadence in episode one to the series finale is almost scary, and shows what an incredible talent Brian Cranston was as the character. The doge meme format is always funny for these sorts of comparisons, and in this one, its hard to believe that Bogdon was ever a formidable foe to the mighty Heisenberg. Walt in Felina would definitely not be intimidated by the eyebrows. There are very few fictional characters who fit the “one who knocks” concept as well as Walt.

Lies We Tell Ourselves

Some of these lies are very relatable, but one stands out, and takes five seasons to culminate. It’s not until Felinathat Walt reaches a catharsis and tells Skyler of his true mentality and reveals his selfishness. While a normal person uses their lie to enable themselves one more Netflix episode, Walt used his family to justify five seasons of crime and murder. And that’s just what he directly caused. The Heisenberg promo photo has become a major source for Breaking Bad memes, as it best incapsulates Walt’s self seriousness. The image has been overused and tossed on to so many different memes.

Heartwarming

If the viewer zooms out for a moment to think about the events that occur in Breaking Bad, this meme isn’t untrue in any way. Had Walt and Jesse decided to sell lemonade or wash cars to raise the money he needed, Breaking Bad could’ve been a wholesome tale of student teacher bonding. It’s a shame for them that neither of those ventures would’ve brought the same revenue as the meth business, as many lives in Albuquerque could’ve been saved. The photo is what makes this meme so hilarious, as their serious faces contrast the heart warming caption. The relationship with Jesse is part of what made Walt one of the best Breaking Bad characters.

Sir, This Is A Burger King

Walter White’s simmering intensity makes for some great drama, and as previously mentioned, great memes. It’s fun to imagine the presence of Heisenberg in normal, everyday situations. In this case, its arriving at a Burger King, but fully loaded.

It would likely be quite terrifying to be the server behind the counter when any man with that facial expression appears, in particular one with the egotistical nature of Heisenberg. Fast food restaurants beware!

Mr. Pinkman

The dichotomy between Walt and Jesse is what makes their on screen chemistry so interesting. The two have vastly different composures, and ultimately different natures, which ends up defining their relationship. The meme shows the two actors dressed up as each other’s character. What a show that would be, if the characters were played by the opposite’s actor. It’s hard to imagine a flashpoint timeline where this exists, but it is incredibly funny. Kudos to the actors for making light of their beloved characters. Bryan Cranston’s comedic side is what makes him a Breaking Bad actor who could be a good fit for the MCU.

The Hunt for Heisenberg

The amount of times Hank’s suspicions of Heisenberg are completely accurate builds up a ton of anticipation to the inevitable fall of Walter White’s alter ego. Cartoonishly depicting Hank’s mission to find Heisenberg, the meme shows just how close he was on so many occasions. The hypothetical question of “what if Hank hadn’t sat down to use the toilet, and then discover the Walt Whitman book” has been discussed often by the Breaking Bad community, as many fans wonder what Walt could have accomplished had coincidence not led to his downfall. Hank’s death also became one of the most unexpected TV deaths.

Superman Disguise

Though it isn’t quite as obvious as Lois Lane or Perry White recognizing Clark Kent as Superman, some fans are surprised it took Hank as look as it did to crack down on Walt as Heisenberg, given how many clues may have hinted at it at different points.

Walter White has some clever diversions to conceal his identity from the DEA, but is also saved more than once by pure luck. It makes the audience wonder if Hank ever pondered the idea, or if he doubted Walter and always saw him as the shy high school teacher from the pilot.
