Martin Luther King Jr Day honors the birthday of the late civil rights leader who inspired change and millions of people. This year, the holiday falls on Monday, January 16, meaning many businesses will be closed for the day despite some operating at reduced hours, but are banks open today?

Despite King’s actual birthday being on January 15, on the third Monday in January of each year, MLK Day is a federal holiday in the United States honoring his birthdate. This year, it falls a day after what would’ve been his 94th birthday.

With most stores and business establishments opening during the MLK celebrations, some having reduced hours, others will close for the day.

No, all banks will be closed for the day. Martin Luther King’s commemoration date means all government agencies, banks, corporate offices, and banks will be closed for the day.

Still, it’s recommended to call local agencies to confirm their holiday closures, or to check they’re open before heading out. Additionally, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed.

Nonetheless, ATM and online banking services will be available for inquiries. Those needing assistance in person will have to wait until the following day, as per business hours.

Post offices will also be closed today, meaning no financial service will be available.

Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr Martin Luther King Jr was a civil rights leader.

He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, and helped organize the 1962 non-violent protests in Birmingham, Alabama. King also helped the 1963 March in Washington, where he delivered the iconic ‘I Have A Dream’ speech.

Four years later, on April 4, 1969, he was assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis, Tennessee.

Since then, the world has remembered him for his sacrifices and impact on today’s society.

Where is MLK Day celebrated?

Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day is celebrated across America.

At first, only a couple of states celebrated what would have been his birthday. However, in 2000, it was decided that all 50 states of the United States would honor the national holiday.

MLK Day forms part of one of the eleven national holidays observed in the country.
