Amazon Prime Gives First Look at Billy Porter's Directorial Debut

Written by Lily Fisher — 0 Views

Billy Porter is stepping behind the camera to direct for the first time with Anything’s Possible. Ahead of its July 22 release date, Amazon Prime Video delivered the film’s first images and a trailer.

The film follows Kelsa, played by Eva Reign (Sideways Smile), a trans girl in her senior year of high school. She will be joined by costars Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), Simone Joy Jones (Bel-Air), and Kelly Lamor Wilson (Freaky).

The romantic coming of age film is not only the directorial debut of Billy Porter, but it is the feature-length debut for writer Ximena Garcia Lecuona. Lecuona has previously written the shorts Satanic Panic! and Goatsucker. The two will act as executive producers with Alison Rose Carter. Christine Vachon, David Hinojosa, Andrew Lauren, and D.J. Gugenheim will produce.

Amazon Studios put out images from the film on its social media pages. Some of which show Reign with her costars, and others highlight the director in action as he works with the cast.

The truth is in the title. Here's your first look at Billy Porter's directorial debut, #AnythingsPossible, coming July 22 to @PrimeVideo. 💕

Porter has had success across different mediums in his career. The Broadway star has won a Tony and Grammy for Kinky Boots, among many other awards in his career. In 2019, he won an Emmy for his leading performance in the series Pose, which ended after three seasons. He has worked with Amazon Prime before with last year’s Cinderella.

In an interview with Them, Reign spoke about the film’s impact on her, especially as she got the leading role as a Black trans woman.

“It’s ironic: The movie’s called Anything’s Possible, but I didn’t believe it,” she said. “My whole life, I’d wanted to be an actress, but even after I got that call I was telling myself, I’m a Black trans girl — I’m not going to be the lead in a movie. That’s not feasible. I’ll be lucky to play someone’s friend.”

Anything’s Possible releases on Amazon Prime Video on July 22.
