He was named to SuperPrep’s All-America Team, and the magazine put him in the top 30 linebackers in the country. He was named an All-American by PrepStar, which also put him in the top 10 linebackers in the Southeast. Rivals.com named him an All-American, and they put him in the top 15 outside linebackers in the country. As a senior in 2001, he had 114 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He also ran for more than 800 yards. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that he was one of the top four linebackers in the state of Georgia. In 2001, he was the team’s MVP.
Going to college
Crowder went to the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, on an athletic scholarship. He played football for coach Ron Zook’s Florida Gators team in 2003 and 2004. He was supposed to sign with Florida in 2002, but he didn’t do so until January 2003 because he needed to get his knee better first. Before the 2003 Outback Bowl, he joined the Gators and worked out with the team.
Crowder started nine of the 11 games he played in as a freshman in 2003. This was the most starts for a freshman linebacker in the school’s history. During the season, he would make the most tackles of any freshman in the country. Even though he missed two games, he was the best linebacker, the best true freshman, and tied for ninth on the team with 816 plays. He was the first true freshman linebacker to start for the Gators since Travis Harris started four games as a true freshman in 2000. Crowder had surgery on his knee on October 1 before the game against Mississippi, so he missed the game against the Rebels. He came back 10 days after surgery to play against LSU and led the linebackers with seven tackles. LSU went on to win the national championship.
Crowder led the linebackers with 106 tackles (an average of 9.6 per game), which was the second-highest number on the team as a whole. He also made five tackles that led to a loss of yardage, had two sacks, stopped four passes, and forced a fumble. Against Arkansas, he led the defense with 12 tackles and one pass breakup. Against Vanderbilt, he led the defense with 15 tackles, which was a career high at the time. Crowder made Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen throw an interception that changed the game. This led to a touchdown for Florida and gave them the win.
In 2004, when he was the team captain, he had the third-most tackles (73), which earned him the award for best linebacker on the team. Crowder led the Gators in tackles in six games, and with 8.5 tackles for loss, he was third on the team. He picked off his first pass, a Matt Jones pass thrown by Arkansas, and ran it back 22 yards to help his team win 45–30. Crowder got two quarterback sacks against LSU’s JaMarcus Russell, which was his career high. Against Mississippi State, he made 18 tackles, which was the most in the SEC and the most in his career. He also caused the second fumble of his career. He started seven of the nine games he played in this season. However, he hurt his foot in the first quarter of the game against Georgia and missed almost all of the next three games. In the Peach Bowl against Miami, he picked up his third fumble of his career and made three tackles.
