Influential Tribal Leader, Ada Deer of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, has passed away. She died peacefully, in her sleep, at approximately 9:45pm on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
Just eight days ago, Ada celebrated her 88th birthday, surrounded by friends and family.
“Ada was the first woman to head the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. Her tireless work of political activism and advocating for Native American rights has paved the way for women and Native folks across the country to make their mark. Because of Ada Deer, Wisconsin is a better, more just place. Our condolences to those mourning. Travel well, Ada,” the Democratic Party of Wisconsin wrote in a Facebook post.
